General Information

The WSU Math Corps Summer Camp and High School Bridge Program is a six-week mathematics enrichment and mentoring program for students in grades 7 – 12, who live and/or attend public school in the cities of Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park. The program, which this year will run from Tuesday, July 6th, 2021 – August 13th, 2021, brings middle and high school students together with college students and mathematicians, to share in the teaching and learning of mathematics, in a university setting. The program is normally housed in two separate sites on Wayne State’s campus but this year, as of now, we will operate virtually.  It is expected that if you received a tablet last summer, you will use that to participate this summer, we cannot provide an additional device.  We are currently not sure if we can provide a tablet for new students at time.

The 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students receive instruction from University faculty and enjoy a variety of learning activities led by the college and high school students under the supervision of professional educators. The high school TA’s and PA’s serve as role models and “big brothers” or “big sisters” for the younger kids and engage in their own learning of both fundamental and advanced mathematics.

College Instructors serve as lead to the middle and high school teams. They are responsible for ensuring the youth on their teams are following the daily schedule, are completing all assignments, and serve a mentoring role to the youth in the camp.  Some responsibilities also include tutoring, grading Homework and Quizzes and attending daily Staff Meetings to debrief about the day.

College Assistants help fulfil two very important roles in the camp. The first is to ensure that all logistical processes related to camp run smoothly and efficiently. This can include: taking attendance throughout the day of camp, facilitating activities in Zoom rooms, assisting CIs during the day, tutoring middle school students, and serve a mentoring role to the youth in the camp.  They also ensure every student in the program is safe. This will include monitoring students in Zoom sessions and informing senior staff of any incidents that may occur.

Because the Math Corps follows the model of kids teaching kids, it is imperative that all college staff display the behaviors and beliefs of the Math Corps at all times while logged in and performaing any task.

Eligibility: For a student to be eligible, he/she must be a current or incoming college student in Fall 2021.
