You are applying for a paid position as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or a Program Assistant (PA) in the WSU Math Corps Summer Camp and High School Bridge Program. The PA position is open only to returning students.
The WSU Math Corps Summer Camp and High School Bridge Program is a six-week mathematics enrichment and mentoring program for students entering grades 7-12 and who live and/or attend a public school (including charter schools) in the city of Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park. The program takes place on Wayne State`s campus with the camp divided into two sites - Site 1 and Site 2. Built on a philosophy that`s based upon "loving and believing in kids"' the Math Corps immerses every child in a caring and mutually supportive community centered around kindness.
The 7th, 8th, and 9th graders in the program receive instruction from University faculty and enjoy a variety of learning activities led by college and high school students. The high school students entering the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades hold paid positions as Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Program Assistants (PAs) serving as mentors, role models and “big brothers” and “big sisters” for the younger kids - all while engaging in their own learning as well. All students get both a strong grounding in the basics of mathematics and the opportunity to explore some really cool advanced topics. Activities range from art to robotics to poetry to chess to sports day and more! Having fun is a requirement.
All students accepted into the program receive:
- a light breakfast daily
- lunch every Thursday
- supplies for the program inluding a notebook, folder, & pencil
- bus tickets, if needed
- a Math Corps t-shirt
- High Schools Students should currently be in grades 9-11
- Must be a resident of and attend a public school (including charter schools) in the city of Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park.
Schedule
Camp Dates: July 8th - August 16th, 2024.
Days and Hours:
- Middle School Students: Monday - Thursday 9:30 am – 2:30 pm
- High School TAs and PAs Monday - Thursday 9:00 am – 3:30 pm
Optional Fridays: Friday sessions, featuring special activities will be offered each week, weeks 1-5, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Attendance on Fridays is optional.
Closing Ceremonies: Friday, August 16th at 6:30 p.m.
TA/PA Registration and Orientation: Tuesday, May 14th at 6:30 pm
Student Registration and Orientation (TAs and PAs must attend): Tuesday, June 18th at 6:30 p.m. or Thursday, June 20nd at 6:30 p.m. The date depends on the site to which the student is assigned.
TA/PA Training: June 17th, 18th, 20th,and 21st, 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. AND July 12th, Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, March 22, 2024, or until all spots are filled. Returning Math Corps students will receive priority consideration provided their application is received by Friday, March 8, 2024.

- Your January or February report card.
- An Essay of at least 100 words.
