ONCE YOU BEGINE YOU MUST COMPLETE THE ENTIRE APPLICATION -- you cannot save your progress and come back later. You will need to have the following matterials before you begin:
- Your High School TRANSCRIPT that includes grades from January/February 2024.
- An Essay describing why you want to work for the Math Corps and what contributions you feel you could make to the program.
New Applicants Essay should describe why you want to work for the Math Corps and what contributions you feel you could make to the program.
Former TAs/PAs should speak to their experiences in the program and reflect on their strengths as a TA/PA and how they can bring that experience and apply it to being a CI or CA.
APPLICATION DEADLINE:
Applications will be accepted until Friday, March 22, 2024, or until all spots are filled. Returning Math Corps students will receive priority consideration provided their application is received by Friday, March 8, 2024.

The WSU Math Corps Summer Camp and High School Bridge Program is a six-week mathematics enrichment and mentoring program for students entering grades 7-12 who live and/or attend a public school in the city of Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park. The program takes place on Wayne State`s campus with the camp divided into two sites - Site 1 and Site 2. Built on a philosophy that`s based upon "loving and believing in kids"' the Math Corps immerses every child in a mutually supportive community centered around kindness.
The Summer Camp serves students who, in the fall, will be entering the 7th or 8th grade, while the High School Bridge Program serves students who will be entering the 9th grade. High school students entering the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade serve as paid Teaching Assistants (TA’s) and Program Assistants (PA’s).
The 7th, 8th, and 9th graders students receive instruction from University faculty and enjoy a variety of learning activities led by college and high school students. The high school students entering the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades are paid as "Teaching Assistants" and "Program Assistants" and serve asmentors, role models and “big brothers” and “big sisters” for the younger kids - all while engaging in their own learning as well. All students get both a strong grounding in the basics of mathematics and the opportunity to explore some really cool advanced topics. Activities range from art to robotics to poetry to chess to sports day and more! Having fun is a requirement.
College Instructors serve as lead to the middle and high school teams. They are responsible for ensuring the youth on their teams are following the daily schedule, are completing all assignments, and serve a mentoring role to the youth in the camp. Some responsibilities also include tutoring, grading Homework and Quizzes and attending daily Staff Meetings to debrief about the day. This is a full-day commitment Monday – Thursday.
College Assistants help fulfill two very important roles in the camp. The first is to ensure that all logistical processes related to camp run smoothly and efficiently. This can include: taking attendance throughout the day of camp, facilitating activities, assisting CIs during the day, tutoring middle school students, and serve a mentoring role to the youth in the camp. They also ensure every student in the program is safe. This position has the opportunity to have flexible hours Monday – Friday.
The Math Corps follows the model of kids teaching kids, it is imperative that all college staff display the behaviors and beliefs of the Math Corps at all times while logged in and performing any task.
Eligibility: For a student to be eligible, he/she must be a current or incoming college student in Fall 2024.
Schedule
Camp Dates: Monday, July 8th- Thursday, August 16th, 2024.
Days and Hours: Monday - Thursday 9:30 am – 2:30 pm
Optional Fridays: Friday sessions, featuring special activities will be offered each week, weeks 1-5, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Attendance on Fridays is optional.
Registration & Orientation: Tuesday, June 18th at 6:30 p.m. or Thursday, June 20th at 6:30 p.m. The date depends on the site to which the student is assigned.
Closing Ceremonies: Friday, August 16th at 6:30 p.m.
TA/PA Registration and Orientation: Tuesday, May 14th at 6:30 pm
Student Registration and Orientation: Tuesday, June 18th at 6:30 p.m. or Thursday, June 20nd at 6:30 p.m. The date depends on the site to which the student is assigned.
TA/PA Training: June 17th, 18th, 20th,and 21st, 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. AND July 12th, Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
CI Training: June 13 & June 14 from 9:00am - 1:30pm and June 20 - June 22 from 2:00pm - 3:30pm
CA Training: June 13 & June 14 from 9:00am - 1:30pm and June 22 from 11:00am - 3:30pm
Camp Hours for CIs/CAs:
- CIs – 8:30AM-4:30PM
- CAs – Have flexible hours but will be asked to keep days & hours the same for each week. Generally, CAs will work between the hours of 7:30am - 4:30pm.
